Military Life Insurance is designed to provide financial benefits following death whilst Critical Illness cover is designed to provide financial benefits following diagnosis of medical conditions, which will be specified in the policy documentation. Some policies may also cover accelerated terminal illness such as when someone is diagnosed with twelve months or less to live. VALO offer the Optional Life and Critical Illness extension to the Ministry of Defence appointed PAX Personal Accident Plan. Membership of the PAX plan is required to gain access to the Optional Life extension. Just like the Personal Accident Plan, our military life insurance provides worldwide, 24/7, on or off duty cover. It is designed to extend your existing Accidental Death benefit to cover death by natural causes. To remind you, death as a result of an accident such as gunshot or blast is already covered under the Personal Accident Plan. Whilst suicide is specifically excluded under the Personal Accident Plan, it is covered under the Life extension after a twelve month qualification period. Please refer to the Policy Terms and Conditions for full details. If you were to select Individual cover then the plan would provide protection for you, and if you are a single parent, all of your children from 28 days old to 18 years old or 23 years if in full time education. Family cover is designed to provide cover for you, your partner or spouse and any children you, they or you both have up from 28 days old to 18 years old or 23 years if in full time education. Type and Level of cover would match that taken for the PAX Personal Accident plan.
Please refer to the Policy Terms and Conditions for full details. Death by natural causes or terminal illness: Death with no prior payment for critical illness - £10,000 for each unit; Death with prior payment for critical illness - £6,000 for each unit.
In respect of a child aged 28 days old to under 16 years old (irrespective of number of units purchased): Death with no prior payment for critical illness - £7,500; Death with prior payment for critical illness - £4,500. Critical Illness: The critical illness benefit is payable in respect of defined cancer, heart attack or stroke: In respect of you, your spouse/partner and children aged 16 years but under 18 or 23 if in full time education - £4,000 for each unit. In respect of a child aged between 28 days old and 16 years old (irrespective of units purchased) - £3,000.
Please refer to the Policy Terms and Conditions for full details. Suicide within 12 months of the start date. Children under 28 days old. Optional Life Insurance is only available as an extension to the Personal Accident Insurance. The level of cover (number of units) and type of plan (Individual or Family) will be the same as that selected for the Personal Accident Insurance.
Please refer to the Policy Terms and Conditions for full details. The number of units would match that taken for the PAX Personal Accident plan. The premiums shown below are for each unit of cover: | Type of Cover | Individual | Family |
|---|
| Personal Accident | 3.55 | 5.00 | | Optional Life | 1.00 | 1.50 | | Combined | 4.55 | 6.50 |
Uniquely, PAX is administrated by HM Forces HR staff. The Enrolment form can be ordered by calling the PAX Customer Service Centre on: 0800 212480 (from UK) +44 20 8662 8126 (from overseas) and selecting option 1
or by collecting a copy of the brochure from your unit administration office. Once completed, just hand all three sheets of your enrolment form in to your administration office and once the Imprest Holder/RAO/OC PSF has countersigned your form, your cover is in place. Note that you must have the personal accident plan to gain access to the Optional Life and Critical Illness Extension.
Call the PAX Customer Service Centre on 0800 212480 (from UK) +44 20 8662 8126 (from overseas).
They will check the MoD supplied database for your membership details and then ask what happened. You can make a Legal Protection Insurance claim by calling Irwin Mitchell on: 0870 150 0100 or, by writing to: Irwin Mitchell, St. Peter's House, Hartstead, Sheffield S1 2EL. Before calling either number, it may be useful to run through the background to your claim: Check the cover – the person you are claiming for must have been covered by the plan at the time of the accident for a personal accident plan, diagnosis for a critical illness or time of death under life insurance. As PAX premiums are deducted from pay, you should find the words “pax insurance” under the voluntary deductions column along with a deduction that should correspond to the level of cover that was selected. If the policy is so new as not to have appeared on the pay statement then either the blue copy of the enrolment form returned after joining the plan or the copy held on the pay records, will suffice as proof of membership. Consider your claim – if the death was not through natural causes or terminal illness then it may be that you should claim under the PAX Personal Accident Plan. The types of conditions covered are all laid out in the Terms and Conditions and it may prove useful to read through these at this point. For critical illness claims you may wish to pay particular attention to the definition for cancer, stroke and heart attack. In the event of a life insurance claim probate will be required but VALO Ltd may be able to assist you through our discounted legal services package for PAX members.
Once the call centre have established your plan membership and the background to the claim, they can post out a claim form for completion. If you have any questions on how to complete it then please call again. Note that your local PAX representative may well be holding a claims clinic in your area - so you can speak to them.
